Last year, wandering around Shoreditch, I stumbled on funky dressed folk having a pint at the Royal Oak pub. I was late to the party and, worst of all, my camera battery was dying *sigh*.
This year I was ready to document the Day of the Dead. With my camera fully charged and extra batteries in the backpack I got right on time for the parade to start.
The Day of the Dead on Columbia Road in London creates rather uplifting mood. Still I’m happy to only be an observant of the event.
The truck is so old I’d be surprised it’s legal to drive, it stalled on every stop.
There were plenty of other photographers, covering and participating in the event, with all kinds of cameras, from Ricoh to Rolleiflex. I probably counted as many film cameras as digital. Shooting such an event on film creates extra layer of aesthetics.
Malagueña Salerosa performed live by a local mariachi band is quite amazing.
Surprisingly, there were also Border Morris dancers, creating bizarre Mexican-Wales-England mix.
Managed to snap a few portraits I’m really happy about.
That is it for the Day of the Dead in London 2023.
